Tree Service in West Boylston, MA
West Boylston wraps around the Wachusett Reservoir, which sits in the middle of town, with the village of Oakdale across the water along Route 140; about 2,200 acres of town land was taken for the reservoir, more than in any other town. The whole town is still inside the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area, and state watershed rules apply close to the reservoir and its tributaries. Orloff Tree Service can help you plan tree and land work around both.

Local detailsBEFORE YOU CUT: WEST BOYLSTON TREE RULES
These notes summarize public town and state sources reviewed in October 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the town before work starts. Orloff can help you work out what is needed for your job.
Trees in the public way
West Boylston's Tree Warden holds public hearings on trees in the public way under Chapter 87 §3, with notices issued by the Director of Public Works (DPW: 508-835-4820; Town Offices, 140 Worcester Street).
Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 87, any tree inside the public way or on its boundary is a public shade tree. Only the Tree Warden or a deputy may cut, trim or remove one without a written permit, and removing one requires a posted public hearing first.
Asian longhorned beetle: whole town regulated
All of West Boylston is in the regulated area, one of four communities still in the zone.
The quarantine exists to stop infested trees and branches from being moved out of the area. State officials advise confirming that a tree company has an ALB compliance agreement before hiring it, checking with the program or your town before moving yard waste, and buying firewood where you will burn it (or using certified heat-treated wood). MA ALB program: 508-852-8090 or 1-866-702-9938.
Wachusett Reservoir protection zones
The DCR Division of Water Supply Protection's Wachusett/Sudbury regional office is in town at 180 Beaman Street. In the Primary Protection Zone, within 400 feet of the reservoir and 200 feet of tributaries, alteration including construction, excavation, grading, paving and dumping is prohibited.
The Secondary Protection Zone, 200 to 400 feet from tributaries plus floodplains, some aquifers and bordering vegetated wetlands, restricts altering those wetlands and other listed activities.
Conservation Commission
The Conservation Commission, established in 1972, covers wetlands and the 100-foot buffer zone, and it has held public hearings on individual tree removals as recently as August 2026. Ask the Commission whether any local rules apply beyond the state Wetlands Protection Act.
TREE PROBLEMS WE SEE AROUND WEST BOYLSTON
Labeled by how local the source is: this town, Worcester County, or statewide.
Asian longhorned beetle
West Boylston is one of four communities still in the regulated zone. Host trees named by officials are maple, poplar, willow and elm.
Spotted lanternfly
Now in nearly 150 Massachusetts communities since it was first detected in 2021, and the City of Worcester calls itself a hotspot. We found no West Boylston-specific report.
December 2008 ice storm
The Worcester Plateau was coated in ½ to 1 inch of ice, and nearly 400,000 Massachusetts households lost power. The National Weather Service noted that many upslope, northeast-facing locations in Worcester County saw significantly more icing than surrounding areas.
Emerald ash borer
Detected in all 14 Massachusetts counties, with 29,551 acres of ash mortality and dieback statewide in 2024. Ash trees near homes deserve a close look.
Hemlock woolly adelgid
Identified in every Massachusetts county. Thinning hemlocks with white, woolly tufts at the base of the needles are worth an arborist check.

Is West Boylston still in the Asian longhorned beetle quarantine?

Can I take brush or firewood out of West Boylston?
Not without checking first.
Can I cut trees near the Wachusett Reservoir?
Work close to the reservoir is tightly limited. Within 400 feet of the reservoir and 200 feet of tributaries, the Watershed Protection Act prohibits alteration such as excavation, grading and dumping. Contact DCR's Wachusett office at 180 Beaman Street before planning any work there.
Who do I contact about a tree along a West Boylston road?
The Tree Warden handles public-way trees and holds Chapter 87 hearings, with notices issued through the Director of Public Works (508-835-4820).
